Sometimes
we discover something that changes everything! That’s where we are now with the
Mariposa Community Network. It started out as a simple, inexpensive TV
promotion for a business and business community and has evolved into a
“Community Network” of programs and distribution/broadcasting points. It’s
still evolving.
Our
first it was a test. Then, after much discussion with a “community” of folks
involved in this new technology (http://oldtownmariposa.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html) a “concept”
evolved into a regular “program”, a “channel” of several programs and a
“network” that gets our message out to thousands of people. How this all
started, a little over 18-months ago is not the story, however. The story is
what “it” has become.
“Bob,
you guys have created a unique picture of our community” I’m told by a “fan”.
She, a relative newcomer to our community, says she starts going through the
YouTube Old Town Channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUzWnS0htSbFonBRTY3LsYw) and sees a
“show” about someone that looks interesting and learns, not only about the
person, but gets a better understanding of the amazing community she is a part
of now.
That’s
why the “views” of Old Town Shows, that were taped over a year ago, increases
every month. As of early September, we have interviewed close to 90 local
residents and people of interest with the County, with over 157 “show” videos,
there are nearly 13,300 video “views” and nearly 59,000 Google (YouTube host)
“views”; all within a community of around 1,700 people or roughly 18,000 in all
of Mariposa County! The world is watching!
True,
with respect to “numbers” the brand-name, Yosemite is somewhat of an attraction
to an audience that reaches beyond our small community boundaries. Of course,
the Motherlode and California “Gold Rush” history of the community is a draw. I
like to think, however, that the attraction is, in large measure, the “view” of
the people, lifestyle and “place” that this video series represents.
Like
many small rural communities, we don’t get much attention from the “outside”
media world, unless something happens here that is really bad; “news worthy”.
What we’ve managed to create, with the Old Town video series is a “picture” of
a complex network of people and what they do and this picture, while not “News
Worthy” in a traditional media network, is of interest to people. An not just
local people. This is that a real community looks like. This is a view of
“small town America” and a “look” that “normal” media can’t provide. It’s
unique and it’s interesting.
Of
these nearly 160 videos, there are nearly 90 local residents of our town that
have been “spot-lighted” on our show. People from all walks of life. Artists,
scientists, community volunteers, government administrators and elected
officials. Everybody in our community does something and that is what our Old
Town show is all about! The “people” of Mariposa and “what they do”.
The
videos are organized into eight “Sections”; Old Town Mariposa”, “Music
and Culture”, “Mountain Folk and
Community Culture”, “History and Natural Environment”, “Technology
and Science”, “Women of Mariposa-Building Success”,
“What’s
Up in Old Town” and “Mariposa County Update”. Each Guest
is assigned a Section in the YouTube Channel based on the general topic covered
in the Guest Interview.

As
the Old Town “show” expanded, a month or so ago, to the Old Town Channel with
four “shows”, the number of community members that have become part of this
program has expanded considerably and the “view” of our community has expanded
as well. Our four shows include the: Old Town Show, hosted by myself, Bob
Borchard, the “What’s Up Mariposa Show” co-hosted by Sabine Lott and Carole
Dewey, the “Mariposa County Update” show hosted by Mariposa County
Supervisor Marshall Long, and the “Women of Mariposa Show” hosted by
Marlena Hebern. Additionally, we have attracted a group of “supporting hosts”
including Jon Youngblood (KRYZ-Radio), Marina Fisher (Mariposa Farmer’s
Market), Carol Dewey, (Local Businesswomen). Several other local talents are
involved with our “productions” as we grow.
In
addition to our growing production and programming library, our distribution
network has grown as well with some of our shows accessible on the Valley PBS
ByYou Network, and the Central Valley Buzz program accessible on their Website.
We have major expansion plans for OUR network with a Roku “Channel”, program
offerings on the Merced Community METV Channel in Merced County and a regular Central
Valley TV broadcast on KAIL-TV Channel 53.
It
is our hope that by this time next year that our production will expand to
encompass more programming of Yosemite events and activities and “shows” that
depict the rich cultural traditions/heritage of the Mariposa/Yosemite area. It
is our expectation that, as a result of our use of this new “broadcast”
technology, we can significantly enhance the image of our County and it’s
communities, held by the outside world AND improve the dissemination of “news”
and information about our community to our residents.
Sometime,
we discover something that changes everything! The new Communications Age has
dawned in Mariposa and, as a result, we have the opportunity and technology to
build a entirely new Mariposa Community “Network”.
