The Pace of Change:
This has been a very challenging, but interesting week for my exploration of the Multi-Media frontier. With our Old Town Central Valley Buzz TV host, Chuck Leonard hospitalized, our weekly show has taken a little different twist. Today’s show (6/19/14) on KAIL-TV will be hosted by Mike Briggs and my guest, retired Mariposa H.S. Athletic Director Lloyd Hobby, with a little help from my friend Historian Tom Phillips, introduced me to the “Sports” traditions of our High School.

I learned about team pride, school pride and ultimately community pride! I think the show tells an important story about “who we are”, as a “mountain community”. It’s about triumph in a challenging environment. Lloyd talked about the difficulties of starting and maintaining an athletic program in a rugged/dispersed environment (read long bus rides for would be athletes) and lack of funds for equipment/facilities. How the teams were small (in numbers) because we did not have enough student athletes to make up a full-sized team in early times!

In many ways, the struggles of our High School athletic program is a metaphor for the struggles/challenges we have faced/are facing in our community with respect to economic growth/stability and advancement! The success of our athletic programs over the years reflects, in many ways the successes that we have had as a community in facing economic adversity and our small triumphs over the years.

So I read, recently, in an Old West Magazine, that “we can’t understand where we are going until we understand where we’ve been!”. The lessons of history are important for us, as a community (County, State, and Nation) to move forward! That is the thought that kept me awake last night and is motivating this little 3MC “Note” this morning!

It was around 1980 that I convinced the Board of Supervisors to allow me to buy a Tandy TRS-80 desk top computer for the Planning Department. I needed it to write/edit the new General Plan update. Ahhh, the debate. We had IBM Selectric typewriters! Why did we need a computer to “type”? There was Supervisor Bill Moffett who thought we could “get by” with a Commodore 64, like the one he had! Of course, I did not know about how the Commodore 64 worked by I liked the TRS 80 that Reed Marks, who operated the little Radio Shack store down town, operated. I had learned how to use the Tandy word-processing software (which was a lot like modern day HTML coding) and I was introduced to the concept of a “Spreadsheet” (does anyone remember Multi-Plan?).

Eventually other County department obtained IBM based computers and life in Mariposa County “progressed”. I did not realize how much we had progressed until, in the late 80s I went to work with the City of Merced (Planning) and ran into a “steno-pool”, IBM Selectrics and A desk-top computer that nobody used! I brought my own computer/software to Merced to help write their General Plan update!

Today, we are at a new frontier with the implementation of Multi-Media technology! This time, I’m not the “innovator” or leader in bringing this technology into general use in our community. The leadership comes from OUR school system. With instructors like Walt Hebern, and his Multi-Media class and administrators like Jon Corripo, our Assistant Superintendent of Schools, we are breaking new ground up here in these mountains.

Yesterday, we got this week’s show out on the Web and it “airs” today at lunch time. Yesterday, I also had a stimulating meeting with Jon Corripo and Carol Fong, our local Internet/Web Designer, on the implementation of our new I-Beacons down at the Gold Coin. Walt could not join us because he was in training up at the High School.

Jon brought this technology to our attention a few months back and Carol has been exploring how we can “adapt” this technology to our Restaurant operation. The I-Beacon is a communication device that is “located” in a building to alert a potential “user” (with a smart-phone or hand-held device with the proper application software) that there is some “information” available about the “place” that they are NOW in!

The “engine” that makes this technology “work” is what we, in our little 3MC group call Multi-Media “Content”. Written text, sound (spoken words/music), pictures and YES, video!!! All displayed on someone’s mobile communications tool!

Carol has taken my written documentation and translated that into an I-Beacon “message” (The Gold Coin App.) and now, when the Beacons are installed, (this afternoon) our customers can learn about the rich and colorful history of the old Fremont Adobe building and our Gold Coin Restaurant; that includes our menu!!!

We have a few details to work out before we install the Beacons and the Software company has been working with Carol to adapt this multi-media communications technology to our application/setting. This really is ground-breaking stuff! I fully expect that when it is up an operating we will have created a model for how this multi-media application can be applied throughout our community AND yes, sooner or later I expect that we will see it applied in places like Merced, Fresno and Modesto!!!!

Ahhhh, someday the word is going to get out about how these “backwoods” innovators, up here in PosaVille, really are operating on the cutting-edge of technology. We have to “innovate” because WE see ourselves as “behind”, like our successful H.S. athletics program. Have a good week and I’ll be talking to you soon. Bob

Good Morning Again fellow 3MCers:
Yesterday I had a long visit with Jon Corripo from the Superintendent of Schools office. We talked about “innovation” and “adaptation” and the conversation has had me thinking about “things” ever since.

We spoke about our Multi-Media program and various projects and how this technology is being applied and can be applied in our schools and our community. There is a unique “relationship” developing between our schools, our H.S. students, our business community and practicing professionals in our community. Out of this “connection” is a GAIN that I’m just beginning to understand.

As a business person, I've been able to “connect” with cutting edge multi-media technology and the people who know how to develop the “content” I need to promote our business on the new communications media; the Internet. At the same time our young people, students, are developing/sharpening skills that will serve them in “real-world” careers.

Our school “administrators/educators” are able to communicate with business people/professionals and connect their curriculum/knowledge to “real world” problems of business and commerce in OUR community. They, in turn, are able to better prepare OUR students for life in the BIG world! What a TEAM!!!

In talking with Jon, I've come to understand that this is a NEW Paradigm! This is NOT how our education system has run traditionally but it is the direction that the “system” is moving and for good reason! Never before, in the history of man, has technological innovation moved to rapidly. Preparing students for life in this fast paced world has created a whole new set of challenges.

Perhaps the biggest challenge is how WE, as business people, school teachers/administrators, and practicing technology professionals face and adapt to CHANGE! In the business/professional world, “adaptation” has immediate consequences; we either adapt or we fail and go broke! For those in our education institutions, the “consequences” of failing to adapt are more remote. The “consequences” are FELT by the students in the education system!

In my conversation with Jon, in my workings with Walt Hebern and other instructors at OUR High School, I've
learned that we have some really great folks in our community, teachers, who are adapting to change and bringing those changes into the classroom! Over the past two years I've been able to work with some of the students who are being exposed to the changing technologies that OUR “innovative” H.S. faculty have brought into the their classrooms!

Yes, it’s a new world out here and I’m feeling pretty good about where it is going. Our young people are being prepared to face the future. As an added benefit, OUR business community and our tech-pros are benefiting from this innovation and adaptation to Change as well! Our “system” is working! Life is good up here in these Mountains!!!

3MC Meeting Notes 4-30-14

Yesterday, at breakfast, I had my eyes opened to a new world of opportunity. Thank you Damian/Marcus   I’m a little stunned by what is happening here these days. I completely missed the implications of what WE are doing here and what is going on. This morning we had over 16,000 views on our Gold Coin Google site! Our FB page is taking off and every where I go, folks talk to me about the hat I wear on TV! The impact and reach of this new technology is amazing. I’m going to take the advice of an old friend and “follow my nose”; I will see where this all leads us.
Yesterday we talked about Wikipedia and how we establish an “new” presence in Internet space! Marcus will be helping me set up some new postings that should meet “wiki-natzi” standards! Damian has explained how “vectorized graphics” work and how they apply to what we are doing with our media productions and I now am contemplating just how an instant of fun saying “Huan Yin Lai Mariposa” in front of a Chinese video camera can effect how millions of Chinese people “view” us as a community/nation! Boy I hope I don’t look stupid!!! (this is where Jon Turner-an old friend-is going to come to my rescue!)
So here we are creating a whole new “image” for our community! The full impact of all this is just beginning to settle in with me and the word responsible” has taken on a whole new “life” in my life! Tuesday, is a our Valley Buzz show and we will “feature” Wendy Brown doing a “Cowboy” poem about “If These Walls Could Talk” (Gold Coin-Fremont Adobe) and Old Town Mariposa and the upcoming Butterfly Festival! So far, the Air Fair show, last week, has been our most successful “show” so far on YouTube 131 view so far and the FB link has 762 views (typically we get a hundred or so FB views) without “boost” advertising!
Our message is getting out there; we need to keep in mind what our message IS!
The image of OUR community, OUR Art & Artists, OUR History, OUR culture ARE what we are focusing on here. Yesterday Damian, who has been working on the John Bruce Art & Artist Video, talked about John saying that he burned more paintings than he has sold because “they did not meet his expectations” of excellence! With some of this stuff, we don’t get a chance to “burn” our “below standard” products, like my video moment that will be shown on Chinese national TV (hundreds of millions of viewers!). At the same time, as Damian said yesterday, we have to trust our instincts or we can’t move forward!
The subject of the I-Beacons came up and Carol Fong will be working with me to make this happen technically. I will be tapping Walt and Damian to create the messages that we broadcast. This seems to be closely linked to the E-Book “content” concept and here we go again!
This technology is growing faster than, it seems, I have the ability to learn. This “old dogs-new tricks” thing is a challenge but I’m still having fun! Thanks to all of you for helping me stagger through this emerging technology. Hope you have a good week and I will be talking to you. Bob

3MC Meeting Notes 4-30-14

I’m working this morning on getting the Valley Buzz show posted on YouTube. We did our show, according to schedule, on the Butterfly Festival and Wendy Brown-Barry did a great job. Overall, I’m not very happy with how it came off. The music was not right and it’s hard trying to get Chuck to stay on track with OUR schedule (12-minutes is NOT a lot of time). There seemed to be a problem with the sound sync with the video. I guess I will find out what it looks like when we post it. Check it out at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUzWnS0htSbFonBRTY3LsYw

As I watched the show, I got to thinking that WE could produce a better product right here in Mariposa! I think WE need to start thinking along these lines. From a production standpoint, I’m not sure what software they are using but I suspect it is a fairly standard program for this type of production?

I would like to suggest that we start thinking in terms of doing an Internet based broadcast that would feature OUR local media “stars”. We could place these REGULAR “shows” on an “on-demand” site, similar to the Old Town Mariposa YouTube site that I’ve set up, and promote the site through conventional media AND our individual Web sites (YouTube, Facebook, etc.). We would continue to maintain our Valley Buzz programming efforts with the thought of “transitioning” to OUR production base in the future (a year or so???)

Let me know what you think; maybe we can talk about it a little next Saturday at Breakfast? On another note, I had a very interesting visit with Terry Silk earlier this week and we talked about media and promotion. I told him a little about our broadcast/e-book ideas and he suggested that I look into the “Fieldtrip” application http://allthingsd.com/20131203/oh-the-places-your-phone-will-find/ There is some great potential here but, again, it seems to be driven by the idea of “content” and that is where the 3MC group comes in. I loaded the App in my phone and YUP, it works! There is the Fremont Adobe (and about a dozen other local sites) and our site was well done! It was done by a fellow named Barry Swackhamer from San Jose on May 25, 2013; his editor was Syd Whittle. I’m trying to contact them to find out about what they are doing and why??? I’m wondering if they work for Google???

I’ve been looking at the “media picture” that is being produced our OUR Town and, sometimes, I’m not sure it does justice to who/what we are! Yesterday, I went to Wikipedia and read the description of Mariposa and it was all wrong! I don’t know who wrote it but it needs to be corrected! The town of Mariposa was NOT originally established along Aqua Fria Creek and MOVED!

I’ve been thinking a lot about the community “image” that we are gaining and where we are going with this technology. Simple Google searches for OUR key words are interesting with respect to rankings. Yesterday, in a little meeting before Wendy and I went to do OUR show in Fresno there was a brief discussion about establishing a “Mariposa Film Commission”. This idea has some merit but I think we need to have a broader agenda than promoting the “movies” being made in OUR County. We should be looking at “media-arts” in general and how our community is portrayed in “media”.

Back to the Valley Buzz, please look over the schedule and let me know if there is anything you think needs to be added/changed. Linda and I are committed to maintaining this effort, at least through the summer. I will become a little more directive with respect to “production” and I think I’m going to work with Scott & Maggie about finding some more appropriate music. Lighting, camera control and simply making sure that OUR program agenda maintained are also high on my priority list!

Have a good day, Bob

3MC Meeting Notes 5-28-14

It’s on! I will be buying the donuts and coffee; if you want breakfast, it’s on you. We will be getting together, as usual, at the Gold Coin around 8:30. As usual, there will be NO AGENDA! Just conversation. There is a lot going on, of course; the Flash Mob has been a “headline” event, Walt’s award and the BOS recognition of the Multi-Media Department (wow), the “ton” of projects working their way through the system, the end of the school term and “summer fun”, new faces and ideas, the new Multi-Media Studio, Mariposa’s own community TV......... It just goes on!

The meetings typically last about an hour; everyone has a lot going on. I, of course, will try to write up something that summarizes what we’ve talked about but the REAL objective here is to “connect” face to face. WE are making a difference! We see/hear it in Old Town every day. I’m getting a lot of positive feed-back about the Central Valley Buzz/Old Town Mariposa show and our Internet “numbers” are growing! As a “promotion” for Downtown Mariposa, the Gold Coin’s business is doing well as a result of this “investment”. I think that it has raised the visibility of the downtown in general and has complimented efforts by Sue Carney, the Chamber of Commerce and the Tourism Bureau. The feedback I’m getting, from out-of-towners, is that Mariposa is a much more interesting place than they understood or expected! The reality is that OUR Multi-Media “tools” are working. We’ve just begun to understand the real potential of the effective use of this communications technology!

I’ve pulled together an update to my “Old Town” show schedule (see attached). I thought I would share it with the group (looking for ideas-suggestions). Note that the concept is driven by the “Inbound Marketing” approaches to “Content” creation; I’m using the Coin in the background but the show is about MARIPOSA in general and “Old Town” Mariposa specifically! The latest “show” focused on the John Muir Festival and Internet “links” are:

I’ve been posting all of these video’s on my Old Town YouTube site https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BBEpjsvrr4

I even have video links built into my Web Site: http://bettsgoldcoin.com/  (thanks Carol!!!) Walt has been posting video stuff on his YouTube sites and we’ve linked to these sites as well. After two years, we’ve developed some pretty good “posted” library stuff and we have amassed a pretty large “stock” of file resources that we can apply to new projects as they develop! Of course there are several “new” applications for this “content” including I-Books, I-Beacons, and other Internet based communications systems.

My point in putting all this in this e-mail is that there is a lot going on! We are making a huge impact and I THINK we should spend at least a little time Saturday talking about the “image” that we are getting out there!

We, individually & collectively, are making an impression on the world out there (and on OUR OWN Community) and I think we might spend a little time talking about the “quality” of that impact!

Of course, the “meeting” or gathering or whatever you want to call it, will take it’s own direction, as usual. Now you know that I will try and “steer” the discussion (a little) to get to my concern! Have a good day and see you, hopefully, Saturday morning!

3MC Meeting Notes 6-1-14

Team:
Saturday morning we discovered the new carrot cake donut from the donut shop down the street Donut A-Go Go! We talked about where we are with various projects with the school. Summer is almost here. We discussed the development of an off-campus studio in cooperation with Eric and Amber McClard. We also talked about our need to improve our audio recording equipment/technical approach! As a follow-up on the audio discussion, I had a long discussion with Mike Hall, down the street at the Ciera Wine Cellars, who is a musician and pretty knowledgeable with respect to sound recording/systems. It will be a struggle but he will be joining us at our weekly Saturday morning meetings. He has some ideas and experience as does his friend Terry Lavios who used to do a TV program (in another life) and is very knowledgeable about “production” studio lay-outs and operations! Our capabilities are expanding!!!

As promised, I got my “agenda” on the table (with the donut bribe); with our growing exposure (read success), our “media image” become more critical! I find myself, via the Central Valley Talk TV show/on-demand Internet access, something of a “signature” figure in this little promotional media effort; the “look” of Old Town (Think “Cowboy Hat & Vest”). There is, of course, much more. The approach, style and “content” of the show is very much a part of this growing image and WE need to be sensitive to what WE are telling people about Mariposa. We also talked about “linkages” that are developing. Our “show” guests represent an audience for the show as exemplified in the number of “hits” the show gets for various guests. The “make-up” of these groups are playing a important role in the “demographic” for our “local/regional” audience and has an impact on the larger audience of the “show”.
  • For example in order of YouTube Video (“Old Town” Shows) views:
  • Mariposa County HS 100 yr. anniversary (Celest Azevedo, HS. Principal)  2 mos. ago 145 views
  • John Muir Festival, 4 days ago; (Ray Winter, UC Merced/John Muir group) 113 views
  • Spring Break in Mariposa (Me) 1 mo. ago; 103 views.
For this reason, “show” program schedule becomes important with respect to the guests that I invite and the topics that we cover. I’ve attached the Program Schedule for your information/review/comment. We can look at the viewership of the FB Pages and the Google sites and pull out other interesting “demographic” information but the point is that my guests on the show play an important role in shaping OUR audience. Right now, our Gold Coin Google site has almost 20k views, our “Old Town” site has around 6k and our FB pages are doing well, viewer wise, as well.  With our Old Town FB page, we have done a little cross-linking with the Chamber FB page and boosted both our respective “likes”. A lot to think about here!!!

Aside from sampling Donut A-Go-Go offerings, we talked about our upcoming schedules through the summer and project status. Big ones on the board include our Art & Artist interview with John Bruce, the Flash Mob, the Coulterville “Ad” for Terry Silk and Walt’s vacation to Europe this summer. We talked a little about how he could “work” on his vacation! My thought was that he could explore “hospitality” attitudes in various countries vs. OURS!

We will get together next week. Life is good and have a good week! Bob

5-17-14 3MC Meeting notes

Phew, what a week!
Last week our KAIL show featured Kathy McCorry from the Chamber, this week Terry Silk from the Tourism Bureau will be my guest. After that it the John Muir festival and on and on. We met to discuss creating a multi-media center near downtown and Tuesday, while Terry and I are in Fresno taping our show, Kathy/Walt and crew will be “flash-mobbing” Old Town Mariposa! Things are moving forward at a pretty fast clip right now. The idea of having a Community TV (Web-Based) program now seems very real. Every day we learn something new. I’ve also talked to a couple of local (Old Town) merchants about sharing some “stage” time on the KAIL-TV program.

Carol Fong, our Gold Coin “Web-Master”  is working with us to create three I-Beacon sites in the Coin and we have followed up on Terry Silk’s “Field Trip” site and found that we, here in Mariposa, have a rich collection of “stuff” that people can tap into with their mobile devices. Go to: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nianticproject.scout. The content, for our town/the Gold Coin, is great in this application. We need to explore how we can enhance this information source and “upgrade” our WiFi book to provide people with links. There is great commercial application for this Field Trip site in OUR businesses. We will be needing to develop “content” for our I-Beacon blasts. My thoughts NOW (this is an evolving process) is that we would place on beacon near the entrance to our building and focus on the building/business/J. Fremont history. The second would be placed near the murals and a third near the gun (shooting-tool) collection. This collection has become a big draw to customers (local & visitors). There is a lot of interest in OUR history and this collection catches people’s imagination without being political!

Our Art & Artist projects have been slipping. The interview/profile with Dewitt and Franklyn kinda fell apart. The John Bruce project is on hold, briefly, while Damian and I work through our “other” list (s) of projects. I’ve talked with a couple of our Gold Coin performers and I plan to do a “show” with them in Fresno and I plan to apply the same techniques/approaches with them that we have been developing in our Art & Artist profile. A short music clip and the artists story! This might be a great opportunity to “test-drive” this concept in the 12.5 minute “window”. I’ve been contacted by Sal Maccarone about putting another one of his sculptures in the Coin and this opens up some other interesting opportunities with respect to promoting our local art community! We could connect on of our I-Beacons to his art piece and TELL Sal’s story to our visitors!

There is a lot going on and, as always, it has been a concern that as we achieve wider “exposure” (we are over 18,000 “views” on our Gold Coin Google site https://plus.google.com/114746803474998405513/posts?hl=en and our Old Town site https://plus.google.com/102820018984171251854/posts is growing daily. I’ve been exploring the “linkage” between our Gold Coin Web site, our FB pages and the Google sites; they all work together and, with the multi-media (video) dimension, it seems like there is a great deal of “synergy” being created!????

At another level, I’ve been communicating with some of my “planning” peers (yea, I still do that “stuff”) and “connecting the dots”.
https://www.linkedin.com/groupItem?view=&gid=2463680&type=member&item=5870172716367118340&commentID=5873798967904456704&report%2Esuccess=8ULbKyXO6NDvmoK7o030UNOYGZKrvdhBhypZ_w8EpQrrQI-BBjkmxwkEOwBjLE28YyDIxcyEO7_TA_giuRN#commentID_5873798967904456704 Some of my “old bosses” from some Valley cities have been “tuned-in” to what I’ve been working on up here and thinking about how this could be applied in their cities! You never know where this might lead.

Yup, there’s a lot going on and I recall what my old friend Bob Perez told me; “sometimes you just have to follow your nose with ‘things’ and see where they lead you”. I’m not sure where all this is heading but it seems to be working. Business is good; we have a lot of people down-town (Old Town) and folks are finding out that we are a fun/interesting place to visit-even if you already live here! There is a lot going on right now and I hope this “little” e-mail blast finds you all doing well, wrapping up school and getting ready for a busy summer. Life is good. Bob

Central Valley Buzz Program Schedule 6-1-14

Bett’s Gold Coin Family Sports Tavern

“Old Town Mariposa”-Central Valley Buzz TV Program Approach

Purpose:
Mariposa is a unique area with a colorful history. The people who have called this area “home” over the centuries (including the Miwok Indians) have been heavily influenced by the natural setting, which includes Yosemite Valley. Gold was first discovered in Mariposa in 1849 by a party of minors, from Sonora Mexico, led by John C. Fremont on land that he was claiming as part of a Mexican Land Grant that he had bought.

Objective:
The “Old Town” Mariposa show has the key objective of giving viewers an update as to what is going on in and around OUR “Old Town” Mariposa. Additionally, this program is “putting a face” on Mariposa featuring people who play important roles in OUR community.

What is going on is much more than community activities and events. There are significant community issues that have huge implications around the region and the nation. The simple fact that Yosemite National Park, perhaps one of the most well-known Parks in the world, is in OUR back-yard makes OUR community newsworthy at an international scale.

In my “programming” for this “show” I’ve tried to feature entertainment and cultural events around our Town. My primary subjects are the Art & Artists of our community and the “Where History Lives” aspect of OUR life-style. I try to stress the cultural heritage of our town and the role that Mariposa has played in California and our Nation’s history. John and Jessie Fremont are focus points for my presentations.

At the same time, we cannot ignore the Natural History and Environmental Implications of OUR residency here.

The schedule for the program is dynamic and the focus of our “shows” has evolved as we have learned to use this media. We, at the Coin, have decided that this media is most effective if we do it weekly for a brief show. We try to incorporate lots of pictures/video into the show to supplement the “interview” format. We bring our own multi-media supplements on a zip drive. Following the “show’s” taping on Tuesday, we are given a USB (or other recorded media) device with the show on it that we can post to the YouTube web site for “Old Town” Mariposa:

And promote via our “Old Town” Mariposa Facebook site: https://www.facebook.com/OldTownMariposa

All of this, of course, is “linked” to our Gold Coin Web site, Facebook site and our Google site.

Audience:
The “show” has two “broadcast” modes. The first is conventional TV that is broadcast to households within the KAIL broadcast area which includes most of the Central Valley. The Channel is accessible on Cable TV and to some Dish subscribers. The TV broadcast “airs” around lunch time on Thursday and the second broadcast is around 4 or 5 on Thursday afternoons.

The second “broadcast” mode is via the World Wide Web and is accessible to anyone, any place in the world that has Internet access. We post our show on the Web sites above along with other “Old Town” specific information. We also create “links” to these sites via our regular web site. Note that the Google/YouTube sites are formatted for viewing via a mobile device and a large number of OUR views come from these devices.

Our principal “audience” market is the San Joaquin Valley but the show also has direct TV and Internet access to most households in Mariposa County. Of course, with WWW access, the audience is World Wide, potentially, and can be “directed” through the use of a Web site or Social Media site (or other media).

The following program schedule is evolving on a daily basis. Some thoughts are:
   Art & Artists:
1.      Penny Ortwell, Painter
2.      The Trespassers, Musicians.
3.      Cottonwood Creek, Musicians.
